Making a difference in the field, TOPPS Water Protection is the continuation of a well-established series of projects dedicated to reducing pollution from agricultural sources. It is designed to encourage the uptake of best management practices (BMPs) for water protection, the current phase involves 14 EU member states* and will run until the end of 2017.
Earlier phases of the project included the EU co-financed Life 'TOPPS' project on point sources, and more recently 'TOPPS prowadis' which focused on the development of best practices to address diffuse sources. In countries where these projects have already been implemented, TOPPS Water Protection will intensify BMP dissemination by connecting more directly to the farmer. In other countries, the project will first involve adapting best management practices to local conditions, then it will share them with the farming community through training events and workshops. Some key achievements to date include:
- Establishing best management practices in 24 countries
- The development of diagnostic tools and training materials
- More than 7,000 advisers/farmers trained
*Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, Italy; and countries new to TOPPS: Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, and Slovakia.
