ECPA commits to Sustainable Water Management
Industry underlines commitment to water conservation
European Crop Protection network is committed to protecting and conserving water resources by introducing innovative crop protection solutions and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
As part of that commitment, ECPA has embarked on the Sustainable Water Management project, an initiative of the European Water Partnership.
Water is our most precious natural resource and although renewable, the supply of clean fresh water is decreasing. Water stress will become increasingly common as our population grows and as climate change brings a higher occurrence of severe weather events.
On the 24th of November European Water Partnership launched the voluntary EWS (European Water Stewardship) program to provide water users with concrete measures and tools for the implementation of Sustainable Water Management (SWM). SWM helps with the assessment, verification and communication of water related practices. SWM offers a system that enables industrial and agricultural users to manage water resources in a way that complies with current and upcoming EU legislation.
Sustainable water management is the result of a wide stakeholder process that embodies the collective effort and know-how of water users in agriculture and industry.
Agriculture consumes around 70% of available fresh water; a sizable figure that confirms the crop protection industry as a stakeholder in water conservation issues. European Crop Protection has committed to introduce Sustainable Water Management in all production sites in Europe. Friedhelm Schmider, Director General of ECPA underlined industry commitment: “I believe that only through partnerships, such as this, we can help to ensure the availability of water resources for the future. European Crop Protection is fully committed and is proud to be a partner of this initiative”.
