Today at the Knowledge4Innovation (K4I) General Assembly Friedhelm Schmider, Director General of the European Crop Protection Association (ECPA), was elected in as their President.

Knowledge4Innovation (K4I) is a non-profit, independent multi-stakeholder platform that brings together members from various European associations, public and private organisation, academic representatives and policy-makers having the common aim of promoting science in European decision making.

ECPA, as a founding member of Knowledge4Innovation, recognises the value of the K4I platform, which provides a much needed forum to discuss the future of innovation and its contributions in Europe – said Friedhelm Schmider during his acceptance speech.

For the R&D crop protection industry innovation is imperative. Not only to provide the best possible solutions to combat and keep pace with the evolving pest and plant diseases, but also to fight against the rise of resistance problems. Crop protection is and has to be innovative to its core if it is to deliver the needed efficient tools – Friedhelm Schmider continued.

The crop protection industry is highly active in R&D, investing up to 10% of its sales in developing new products. European agriculture requires continued investment in R&D and the promotion of innovation-driven agriculture is key if it is to remain competitive.

We have a unique opportunity that no generation had before to use all of the technologies available in order to create a truly productive, competitive and sustainable economy.

Innovation is key in all sectors. It is the only way to pave the way to future success in a globalised economy and a constantly changing environment. And this cannot be done without cross-sector dialogue, knowledge exchange and partnerships – Friedhelm Schmider concluded.
